Description
The Sleeping Gypsy is an 1897 oil painting by French artist Henri Rousseau (1844–1910). It is a fantastical depiction of a lion musing over a sleeping Gypsy woman on a moonlit night. This is my painting , using his as a reference .
Rousseau described his painting as follows: "A wandering Negress, a mandolin player, lies with her jar beside her (a vase with drinking water), overcome by fatigue in a deep sleep. A lion chances to pass by, picks up her scent yet does not devour her. There is a moonlight effect, very poetic." (From Wikipedia).
The Museum of Modern Art, located at 11 West 53 Street in Manhattan, New York is where the painting is now for viewing .
So there could be a book written on this painting, but the main question is, what is the Lion doing? Some say he is just looking, sniffing around. Is he getting ready to eat her? It is thought he knows she is injured, she has a club foot and needs a walking stick so he will not harm her. Others think the whole painting is a dream. The Gypsy's eyes are opened just a little as if in a dream state. She is dreaming of a beautiful night and lots of water in the middle of the desert. Or is the whole painting surreal ? The color of the bright moonlight is offset by the gypsy lady's multi-colored striped costume and blanket, the lion, the sea or large lake all of which adds to the surrealist dream-like quality of this scene. A painting like this in your home or office could be talked about forever.
