Description
The scientific name of the African wild dog is "lycaon pictus", a latin term meaning "painted wolf". This is the most common nickname for the African wild dog, but they are known by many other names including "cape hunting dog", "painted dog", "African hunting dog", "painted hunting dog", and "ornate wolf".
African wild dogs are highly social. They usually live in packs of six to twenty individuals with a dominant breeding pair. They communicate through a variety of vocalizations, movements and touch.
These long-legged canines have only four toes per foot, unlike other dogs, which have five toes on their forefeet. The dog's Latin name means “painted wolf,” referring to the animal's irregular, mottled coat, which features patches of red, black, brown, white, and yellow fur. Each animal has its own unique coat pattern, and all have big, rounded ears.
